India vs England 1st Test: Nasser Hussain Says Evan Shane Warne Failed in India

Nasser Hussain Says Evan Shane Warne Failed in India: Former England captain Nasser Hussain says the team’s selection of four spinners in their starting XI was due to inexperience than the availability of spin alternatives. On Thursday, the five-match Test series between India and England begins in Hyderabad, marking the team’s return to red-ball cricket.

The series will be a challenging test for the visiting batsmen and their Bazball plan because of the probable spin-friendly weather. When they hit the field in the first Test, the inexperienced spin lineup will also be up against it.

Rehan Ahmed, Tom Hartley, and Jack Leach are the three spinners that England has picked in their playing eleven. In 2021, only Leach has ever performed in India.

Rehan Ahmed only participated in one Test match in Pakistan last year, but Tom Hartley is making his English red ball debut. Star batsman Joe Root can also roll his arm over when necessary, and in 2021 he took a fifer against India.

“You look at other countries that try to hit India with spin historically. Shane Warne didn’t get that many wickets and that much success in India, be it against the Fab Five or a different Indian batting lineup,” Hussain told Sky Sports.

“I would like a more balanced bowling attack, but I guess with Rehan Ahmed’s second Test match… (he has) hardly debuted. Leach has not bowling for a long time, they feel they need three because looking at that surface… it’s going to turn.”

“Inexperience has led to the four spinners option as well. You’ve got Leach, who hasn’t bowled since June-July. You’ve got the two inexperienced lads in Hartley and Rehan Ahmed, and you’ve got Joe Root. You think if it would’ve been Swann or Panesar as an example, you could’ve gone with a more balanced side.”

England is likely to struggle when the surface starts to favour the spinners if they continue with their Bazball strategy. The Indian squad hopes to secure the Test series victory and continue their winning ways in the red-ball format at home. England, on the other hand, would want to stop the Indian streak of home victories and replicate their 2012 achievement.
