Coronavirus: 53 Journalist test positive for COVID-19 in Mumbai

At least 53 journalists in Mumbai have tested positive for Covid-19, Huffpost reported on Monday citing Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation officials. The number is expected to increase.

BMC Reporters Association president Vishnu Sonawane said the affected mediapersons had been isolated at the Fern Hotel in Goregaon suburb, north-west Mumbai.

A special camp was organised at the Azad Maidan in Mumbai on April 16 and 17 for COVID-19 testing of journalists, during which the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) collected the swab samples of 171 media persons, including electronic and print media journalists, photographers and cameramen.

Journalist Ashok Bagriya tweeted that an entire team of reporters of a television channel in Mumbai had tested positive.

“Tourism Minister Aditya Thackeray, Mayor Kishori Pednekar and the BMC Health Committee chief Amey Ghole arranged for this isolation centre. The BMC is taking full care and all are requested not to go to the hotel’s vicinity,” Sonawane said.

He added, earlier during the day, TV Journalists Association president Vinod Jagdale confirmed to IANS that from the test reports received by afternoon, 30 had tested positive.

A journalist from Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh also tested positive for Covid-19 in March.

“Out of the 171 mediapersons, 53 tested positive for coronavirus,” BMC spokesperson Vijay Khabale said, adding that most of those who tested positive are asymptomatic at present.

All the media persons found infected with coronavirus will be kept in isolation and a process was underway to find out suitable places to the purpose.

The Centre had on March 25 imposed a three-week lockdown to battle the spread of Covid-19. On April 14, Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended the lockdown to May 3.
