England vs Australia 3rd Test: Jofra Archer takes 6 wickets, Australia bowled out for 179

Jofra Archer took 6 wickets to haul at Headingley as England bundled Australia out for 179 on a rain-affected first day of the third Ashes Test.

Archer’s 6-45, 5 of which came in the final session. He reversed the fortunes of the home side after they were in danger of wasting ideal bowling conditions.

Archer’s first performance in England whites saw him crank the speed gun up past 96.1 mph. Clatter three different batsmen on the head but this was a subtler showing of cerebral seam bowling.

Australia scored 136-2 to a third-wicket partnership between David Warner and Marnus Lauschange. But Archer, who made such an explosive debut in the second Test, had Warner caught behind for 61 to spark a collapse of three wickets for three runs.

Tim Paine and James Pattinson were dismissed cheaply and Pat Cummins became Archer’s fifth victim. Even at 173-6, honors seemed to be even, only for Archer to return once again and run through the tail. The last four wickets fell for just six runs.

Marnus Labuschange, replacing Steve Smith who was ruled out due to concussion symptoms sustained. When he was hit by an Archer bouncer during the second test, was out for 74 and Nathan Lyon was trapped LBW by Archer in the last over of the day.

Team England, looking to level the series at 1-1, will be hoping to establish a match-winning first-innings lead on Friday.
