Why Naveen-ul-Haq Banned by ILT20 for 20 Months

Why Naveen-ul-Haq Banned by ILT20 for 20 Months: Afghanistan all-rounder Naveen-ul-Haq has been banned by the International League T20 for 20 months for violating his terms as a player with the Sharjah Warriors.

In 2023, he played 9 matches with the Warriors. Sharjah Warriors tried to maintain him on board and extended their contract for a further year under the same conditions, but he refused to sign the paperwork, according to news agency ANI.

“We do not take pride in making this announcement but all parties are expected to comply with their contractual commitments and recognize that non-compliance can cause damage to the other party. Unfortunately, Naveen-ul-Haq failed to honour his contractual obligations with the Sharjah Warriors and as such the league had no option but to impose this 20-month ban on him,” ILT20 CEO David White said.

“The disciplinary proceedings against Naveen were conducted in a transparent manner and both parties involved were given opportunities to prepare and present their submissions,” he added.

In the nine encounters, Naveen claimed 11 wickets at an average of 24.36, including a five-wicket haul. However, the Warriors had a difficult time and only won three of their ten games, placing them second from the bottom in the six-team league.

The Warriors brought the disagreement to the ILT20. The administration of the league made an unsuccessful attempt to resolve the issue with the aid of an impartial mediator.

The parties were then heard individually by the league’s three-person disciplinary committee, which was made up of White, Col. Azam, the head of security and anti-corruption, and Zayed Abbas, an Emirates Cricket Board member.

After considering the facts, they reached a decision to prohibit and communicated the ultimate decision. Naveen, a lower-order batsman and quick bowler, recently played for Afghanistan in the 2023 World Cup and announced his retirement from one-day international cricket.

“I too came to know last minute, actually,” Ashwin’s father told News 18. “What was going on in his mind I don’t know. He just announced. I too accepted it with full pleasure. I did not have any feelings at all for that. But the way he gave his retirement, one part I was very happy, another part not happy because he should have continued.”

“(Retiring) is his (Ashwin’s) wish and desire, I cannot interfere in that, but the way in which he gave that, there could be many reasons. Only Ashwin knows, maybe humiliation,” he added.

“Definitely, no doubt about it (being emotional for the family), because he was on the field for 14-15 years. The sudden change – retirement – gave us really kind of a shock. At the same time, we were expecting it because humiliation was going on. How long he can tolerate all those things? Probably, he would have decided on his own,” Ravichandran said.

Ashwin only featured in the pink-ball Test for India against Australia, replacing Washington Sundar, who was preferred for the opening match in Perth. In the third Test at Brisbane, Ashwin found himself on the bench again, with Ravindra Jadeja taking his spot in the team.
