IPL 2023 Venkatesh Iyer on use of Impact Player in the IPL

Venkatesh Iyer on use of Impact Player in the IPL: Kolkata Knight Riders batsmen Venkatesh Iyer reckons that the introdcution of the Impact player rule in the IPL 2023 has reduced the utility of all-rounders.

Iyer said that with the rule in place, teams would obviously prefer a specialist sixth bowling option as a substitute instead of giving overs to an all-rounder.

As per the Impact Player rule, both teams can announce five players as substitutes ahead of the game. And can utilize the services of one of them during the course of the match. The option has proved to be quite a big hit among franchises, adding an interesting dimension to the T20 league.

“Honestly, with the coming of impact players, the number of overs an all-rounder is bowling has dropped down drastically. Obviously, if a team has a specialist bowler as their sixth bowler and they don’t want to try their all-rounder…. this is what impact player rule has brought. It has lessened the utility of all-rounders.”

The 28-year-old, however, agreed that the rule is here to stay, admitting that Impact Players are turning out to be X factors. He elaborated:

“It’s a very interesting rule that has come in place. If you are playing in the IPL, it’s an international level tournament, the think tank is so big in the every team. I guess they might have figured it out in the very first match itself. By now everyone knows how to use the impact player. If you see the results, the impact players are turning out to be an X factor.”

“I am 100 percent ready to bowl. I was given clearance by the NCA. The most pleasing thing is not the runs I am scoring, the thing that I am back on the field and playing in such a big tournament.”

The southpaw became only the second KKR batter to score a century in the IPL when he smashed 104 off 51 balls against Mumbai Indians (MI).

KRR Player Venkatesh Iyer Gets Emotional After Not Being Retained

KRR Player Venkatesh Iyer Get Emotional After Not Being Retained: The challenge of holding a huge auction immediately following an Indian Premier League (IPL) championship is that a team must say goodbye to a number of the winning team’s players.

This time around, the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), the IPL 2024 winners, have been like that.

Even though they were able to keep six of its mainstays, KKR was forced to let go of players like Venkatesh Iyer, Nitish Rana, and Mitchell Starc. After being let go, the latter, who has been with the team since 2021, became upset.

“KKR is a whole family in this instance. It’s not just the 16, 20 or 25 players, but also the management, the staff, the guys behind the scenes. There is so much emotion behind that that it kind of makes me a little teary-eyed that my name is not on the retention list,” said a heartfelt Venkatesh Iyer to RevSportz.

“Because there is no video of KKR bidding for me in my first auction. During this auction I would sit like an excited kid to see if KKR put up the paddle for me and if they do, it will mean the world to me,” he added.

KKR has benefited greatly from Venkatesh’s contributions during the past four IPL seasons, reaching the final in 2021 and winning the cup in 2024. In the 2024 IPL final, he even hit the game-winning runs.

Venkatesh acknowledged that the franchise had made strong retentions, but he emphasized the emotion and sense of family at the Knight Riders.

“The honest thing, as someone who analyses cricket as well, is that KKR has had a very good retention. They have covered 14-16 overs with the ball, and with the bat, they have covered five positions,” said Venkatesh.

“The doors are open, and if I have a good auction. I may still end up playing for the team I love the most,” said Venkatesh.
