Argentine police announced on Wednesday that former One Direction singer Liam Payne was discovered dead outside a hotel in Buenos Aires, having fallen from the balcony of his third-floor room.

In a statement, the capital police said they were called to the hotel in the capital’s leafy Palermo neighborhood where they were notified of an “aggressive man who could be under the effects of drugs and alcohol.”

According to the statement, the hotel management reported hearing a loud boom at the back of the establishment. When police came, they discovered that a man had fallen from his room over the balcony.

Emergency workers confirmed the death of the 31-year-old British singer, who was reportedly found in the hotel’s interior patio.

“We’re deeply saddened to learn of Liam Payne’s tragic passing today. During this difficult time, our hearts remain with his family, loved ones, and fans,” MTV said on X.

It was not possible to get in touch with Payne’s record company, Republic Records, or its owner, Universal Music Group, right away.

Alongside Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson, and other members of the now-disbanded musical group One Direction, Payne became well-known across the world.

The boy band gained popularity in 2010 after placing third in the British edition of the X Factor music competition. However, in 2016, the group disbanded as its members went on to pursue solo endeavors and other ventures.

Police and other first responders are all around the hotel now … and authorities have put up a red tent over the body as they begin their investigation into Liam’s death.

Earlier in the month, he had traveled to Argentina for a Niall Horan concert, when the 1D comrades reconciled.

As previously reported, Liam disclosed in June 2021 that, throughout One Direction’s tour, he battled alcohol and prescription drug addictions to the extent that he experienced “severe” suicidal ideation.
