Shai Hope Becomes second-fastest batsman to score 3,000 ODI runs

West Indies opener Shai Hope set a new record on Sunday when he becomes the fastest batsman from the Caribbean to score 3000 runs in the 50-over format of the game. He achieved the feat against India in the third and final ODI of the three-match series at the Barabti Stadium in Cuttack.

Shai Hope managed to score 42 runs in the final ODI with the help of five fours. He was finally sent to the pavilion by Mohammed Shami in the 20th over of the innings. He reached the 3000-runs mark in ODI cricket faster the batting great Vivian Richards who needed 69 innings to get there.

South Africa’s Hashim Amla holds the record of being the fastest to 3,000 runs in the ODI. Pakistan’s Babar Azam had reached the milestone in 68 innings.

Shai Hope has been in the form of his life in the ongoing year. The West Indies opener has scored more than 1300 runs in just 28 ODIs in 2019. He is second on the list of leading run-scorers in ODI cricket in the calendar year, only behind Rohit Sharma who has 1427 runs in 28 ODIs.

Hope has more runs than India captain Virat Kohli who had scored 1292 runs in 26 ODIs before the Indian innings on Sunday.

Hope finished the calendar year of 2019 with 1345 runs at an average of over 60. The right-hander has the best average for a batsman in ODIs this year (minimum 1000 runs).
