T20 World Cup 2021: Indian captain Virat Kohli on Monday ahead of their warm-up match against England confirmed that KL Rahul will bat ahead of him as the opener.

“Things were different before IPL, now it’s difficult to look beyond KL Rahul at the top of the order. Rohit is a no-brainer. World-class player, he’s been solid upfront. I will be batting at 3,” Kohli said at the toss– India vs England.

Notably, Kohli had earlier opened alongside Rohit Sharma in India’s fifth and final T20I during the England tour of India. He had said that he might continue to play for India at the opening slot.

“[If] It augurs well for the team and I would like this to continue, and hopefully continue that form through to the World Cup,” he had stated.

KL Rahul was in red-hot form for Punjab Kings in IPL 2021.

He smashed 626 runs in just 14 matches.

The 29-year-old averaged 62+ in the T20 tournament which featured 6 fifties. His strike rate stood at 138+.

In the UAE leg of IPL 2021, KL Rahul slammed 295 runs in just six matches that comprised scintillating knocks of 98*, 67 and 49.

He is expected to deliver for India from game 1 where arch-rivals India will play Pakistan on October 24, Sunday.
