world Cup Final 2019: England six runs after ball hit Stokes’ bat a big mistake

The ICC World Cup final 2019 at Lord’s on Sunday, England needed nine runs from three balls, which meant New Zealand had their noses in front ever so slightly. After already getting lucky in the 49th over when Trent Boult caught him only to step on to the boundary for a six runs, Ben Stokes was then at the centre of it again in the final over.

With Ben Stokes trying to dive into the crease while attempting a second run, the throw from Martin Guptill in the deep hit the bat of the England all-rounder.

Umpire Kumar Dharmasena, after consulting his fellow on field umpire Marais Erasmus, signaled six runs to be added to England’s score– two scored by the batsman and four off overthrows.

Ben Stokes, who scored 84 runs not out- played his shot and desperately sprinted back with Adil Rashid to make it two runs.

He apologized immediately for the incident as the umpires gave six- two for the running and for the ball hitting the boundary.

Former umpire Simon Taufel referenced rule 19.8 of the MCC rulebook relating to additional runs.

If the boundary results from an overthrow or from the wilful act of a fielder, the runs scored shall be:

  • Any runs for penalties awarded to either side
  • The allowance for the boundary
  • The runs completed by the batsmen, together with the run in progress if they had already crossed at the instant of the throw or act.

It means, batsman had not passed each other for a Second time when the fielder threw the ball, Stokes’ second run should not have counted.

Simon Taufel told Fox Sports Australia, They should have been awarded five runs, not six. Adding that England’s Adil Rashid should faced the second last ball of the last over of the England innings in regulation play instead of Stokes as a result.
