Gears 5 Update: Boss Clarifies Game's Stance On Smoking And Tobacco

Gears 5 Developer the Coalition has teamed up with anti-smoking campaign Truth Initiative in an attempt’ To avoid glorifying smoking” by banning depictions of smoking in its upcoming sequel. Gears 5 does not include any depictions of smoking-part of a move Rod Fergusson, head of Gears studio The Coalition, said is to avoid glamorizing the addictive and deadly habit.

Senior VP at broadcaster Turner, Seth Ladetsky, said the decision had taken, a lot of time and a lot of good thinking, but insisted it was ” the right image for Eleague- and the game itself- to project.

He pointed out that the concept for the character Dizzy from Gears 2 was shown with a cigarette. But in the final game, the character does not smoke. That’s because Fergusson stepped in and stopped it.

Some gears of War games have featured depictions of smoking, but Gears 4 had no smoking and Gear 5 will not either. Fergusson said as long as he is in control of the Gears series, smoking will never return.

The game originally developed by Epic Games, up until the Fort nite studio sold it to Microsoft in 2014 for an undisclosed sum.

People on Twitter commented that this is strange take because the Gears franchise is a Mature-rated series with brutal depictions of violence and alcohol abuse. Why focus so much smoking? Fergusson said he is not trying to be the mortal police, but instead he wanted to cleanse gears of smoking to avoid glamorizing smoking and because of his own personal connection to lung cancer.

Fergusson added, It’s always been important for me to not use smoking as an narrative device, which is why we made the conscious choice to avoid highlighting or glorifying smoking in Gears 5 and throughout the Gears of War universe moving forward, According to the gamespot.
