Google Hangouts Classic version shutdown for G Suite Users Postponed to June 2020

Google has postponed the shutdown of Google Hangouts for G-Suite users to users until June 2020. Earlier, Google announced that it will be transitioning classic Hangouts users in G-Suite domains to Hangouts Chat and Hangouts Meet.

It had set an Oct 2019 deadline for migration of G-suite customers from the classic Hanouts messging service to Hangouts Meet and Hangouts Chat, Google says. The company says that a definitive date will be announced later. The reason for the postponement, Google told the Verge, is that IT firms claim that people are very used to Hangouts. They’d like more time to migrate organizations from classic Hangouts to Hangouts Chat.

June 2020 is now the final transition date for those using classic Hangouts on G-Suite. G-Suite is Google‘s platform for enterprise customers, which competes with Microsoft Office.

Google will add some features to Hangouts in the meanwhile to improve transition experience. These include adding Read receipts to the service and bringing group chats to classic Hangouts.

Company added, We will also provide advance notice once we have a more definitive date, so please monitor the G-Suite Updates blog.

In classic Hangouts, a user can only direct message to another user currently. But in the future, the company plans to add the ability to view or participate in group chats too.

To improve the transition experience of classic Hangouts group conversations, as well as add new Chat feature like Reading receipts. We will also provide advance notice once. Google Allo, a messaging platform app which integrated Google Assistant was launched in 2016 and shut down earlier this year. Google has since used Allo’s capability in its smart speakers and screens, but the app for consumers was shut down in March this year.
