COVID-19 Precaution Dose: India has begun administering booster doses of the COVID-19 vaccine to frontline workers and vulnerable elderly people on Monday.

Around 179,723 new cases were reported in India on Monday, mainly in Delhi, Mumbai, and Kolkata, where Omicron has surpassed Delta as the most prevalent strain of the virus, as per the PIB report.

India will start administering the precaution dose or the Booster dose of COVID vaccine from 10 January to healthcare and frontline workers and comorbid people aged 60 and above in a bid to stymie the coronavirus spread driven by its Omicron variant.

Who is Eligible for COVID-19 Precaution Dose?

An estimated 1.05 crore healthcare and 1.9 crore frontline workers, and 2.75 crore comorbid people in the 60 plus age group would be administered the precaution dose according to schedule, Health Ministry sources said.

Documents required for COVID-19 Precaution Dose?

To avoid hassle Cowin recommends carrying a photo ID to the appointment and registered mobile number at the vaccine boot. Once a session is booked, you cannot cancel it, however, the site provides the option to reschedule it.

Apart from Aadhaar, other IDs approved by the MoHFW are:



Driving license,

PAN Card,

Smart Card issued by RGI under NPR,

Pension Document with Photograph.

The time interval between the second and third doses?

The gap between the date of administering the second dose of vaccine and the precaution dose would be nine months (39 weeks).

How to register for a precaution dose?

Go to the official website of COWIN website –

You will be asked to enter the registered mobile (the one that you used for the previous two vaccine shots). An OTP will pop up on the home screen, enter the digits to log in.

The site will show if you are eligible for Precaution Dose in the Appointments Module.

Tap on the ‘Precaution dose’ tab and then choose an appointment based on your location, and then click on Book appointment.

Only healthcare personnel, frontline workers and people above 60 years suffering from other health conditions are eligible for what the government calls a “precaution dose”.

“The government is committed to providing additional security cover to healthcare and frontline workers on priority,” Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya wrote on Twitter.

Here’s the step-by-step guide on how senior citizens can register for precautionary and booster doses:

-All senior citizens aged 60 years or above with comorbidities will be able to get the vaccination for precaution and booster dose using their current Co-WIN account.

-Beneficiaries can register in advance, onsite, or through the Co-WIN Facilitated Cohort Registration procedure.

-Eligibility of beneficiaries will be based on the date of administration of 2nd dose as recorded in the Co-WIN system.

-Verification will be done preferably using Aadhaar.
