On the other hand, the first IPL auction was a little different. Not even Shane Warne, Ricky Ponting, or Sachin Tendulkar made the list of the most expensive players, despite being part of the auction. When fans found out who the top five purchases from the first IPL auction cost, they were taken aback.

Top 5 most expensive buys IPL Auction:

MS Dhoni:

A year earlier, the Indian captain had guided his side to the 2007 T20 World Cup championship. His selection by the Chennai Super Kings was fortunate for him, since Dhoni has played for CSK in every season since.

Andrew Symonds:

The most priced foreign player in the first auction was the all-rounder. Symonds was acquired by the now-defunct Deccan Chargers, and his salary was just $115,000 less than Dhoni’s.

Sanath Jayasuriya:

The daring first opener was traded to the Mumbai Indians, where he opened with Sachin Tendulkar. With the southpaw scoring over 500 runs in the first edition, MI was hoping for good things with the $975,000 pick.

Ishant Sharma:

The Kolkata Knight Riders selected the towering Indian seamer for an incredible $950,000. Ishant’s first season was not good; in 13 matches, he took only 8 wickets.

Irfan Pathan:

Pathan was one of the most in-demand athletes since he was a top-tier one-day all-around performer. The left-hander played well after being acquired for $925,000 by Kings XI Punjab (formerly known as Punjab Kings), taking 15 wickets in addition to making useful lower-order runs.

Former Indian cricketer Mohammad Kaif feels certain that the IPL rules were altered only to allow Dhoni to play on, despite CSK’s claim that they had not spoken with him about the issue.

“You will get the chance to see MS Dhoni again. He is fit, batting at a strike rate of 200, keeping well, and that is why I believe the rules will keep changing till he wants to play. If he wants to play in the IPL, he will play. He is such a big player, such a big match-winner, and has been a leader for CSK,” said Kaif during a chat on Star Sports.
