Top 5 Catches of Glenn Phillips in International Cricket
Top 5 Catches of Glenn Phillips in International Cricket: Over the past several years, Glenn Phillips, an all-round batsman for New Zealand, has often performed incredible feats of athleticism.
Phillips can wear the wicket keeping gloves and has made a number of outstanding catches and saves both in front of and behind the wickets.
After making his debut in 2017, Phillips became a key component of the New Zealand white-ball team in 2021 and hasn’t looked back.
The batsman, who was born in South Africa, has also established himself in the Test team thanks to his outstanding performance during New Zealand’s tour of Bangladesh at the end of the previous year.
Glenn Phillips, who is well-known for his powerful ball-striking abilities, has exceptional T20I stats, including an average of almost 32 and a strike rate of 143.11.
In addition, he has emerged as the Black Caps’ golden arm when it comes to taking wickets, as seen by his six ODI World Cup wickets and his eight wickets in the two-Test series against Bangladesh.
Yet, Phillips’ rise to fame has stemmed as much from his fielding heroics as his skills with the bat and ball. He has impressed fans across the globe with some of the finest catches as a fielder and wicket-keeper across forms.
Stunner behind the wicket to dismiss Chris Gayle:
Glenn Phillips’ best catch as a wicketkeeper in international cricket came in the early stages of his career in 2017 against the West Indies.
Playing only his fourth game for New Zealand, the 27-year-old scored his maiden international half-century in the first T20I against the West Indies. Phillips’ 40-ball 56 helped the hosts post a formidable 187/7 in 20 overs at Nelson.
In reply, the West Indies got off to a terrific start, with the legendary Chris Gayle striking two early boundaries.
However, in the third over, he top-edged a pull, which Phillips caught with a full-fledged sprint and a dive at the last moment to provide the Kiwis with their first breakthrough.
Flying catch to dismiss Quinton de Kock in the 2023 World Cup:
Glenn Phillips made enormous progress as the all-around white-ball cricket player in the field, with the bat, and with the ball at the 2023 ODI World Cup.
The 27-year-old made an incredible attempt at the point region in the 11th over of the batting in the crucial match against South Africa, but he was unable to hang on to the catch from Quinton de Kock.
But when Phillips struck a game-changing century, his vigil was finally interrupted by a Phillips special. With both feet off the ground, the Kiwi all-rounder launched himself to dispatch De Kock for 114 with a sensational catch at the backward point area.
Incredible running catch sends Sanju Samson packing:
The Men in Blue quickly reached 254/4 in the 46th over on a quiet surface in Auckland, with Samson poised for the game’s last blow at 36 from 37 deliveries. But between mid-wicket and deep square leg, the batsman blasted a length ball from Adam Milne.
To the joy of the home crowd, Phillips ran from deep square leg and maintained eye contact with the ball the entire way to execute a fully-stretched tumbling catch.
India finally finished with a strong 50 over total of 306/7, a score that the hosts pursued with seven wickets remaining in the 48th over.
Catch for the ages highlights Phillips’ versatility in the second Test against South Africa:
The second Test between Australia and South Africa is now underway in Hamilton, and Glenn Phillips’ most recent feat on the field happened there.
After losing the first Test badly, a second-string South African team showed incredible tenacity to take a 31-run lead in the first innings.
In the second essay, the visitors extended their lead and rushed to 204/4, with David Bedingham and Keegan Petersen playing fantastically.
Phillips, in dire need of a wicket, ended the partnership with one of his outstanding fielding performances. Petersen skillfully guided Matt Henry’s toss, but was taken aback when Phillips made a one-handed catch at the gully, sending him packing.
Epitome of athleticism to open the 2022 T20 World Cup with a bang:
After amassing an enormous 200 runs in their first 20 overs, the Blackcaps had the hosts reeling at 34/3 in the fifth over. Phillips chose to step in just as Glenn Maxwell and Stoinis were beginning to work together.
Playing a lofted drive over covers, Stoinis hit the ball nicely for a double. Nevertheless, Phillips executed one of the most renowned outfield catches in cricket history by sprinting in from deep cover and leaping full length with his torso parallel to the ground.

Rohit revealed that wicket-keeper batsment Rishabh Pant thought of a brillinat ploy to slow down things in the middle, helping India disrupt Heinrich Klaasen’s rythm which turned tide in India’s favour.
“When South Africa needed 30 runs off 30 balls, just before that, there was a small break. Pant used his intelligence to pause the game – he had a knee injury, so he had his knee taped, which helped slow down the game – because the game was fast-paced, and at that moment, all a batter wants is the ball to be bowled quickly. But we had to break the rhythm. As I was setting the field and talking to bowlers, suddenly I saw Pant fall on the ground. The physiotherapist had arrived and was taping his knee. Klassen was waiting for the match to start again. I am not saying it’s the only reason, but it could be one of them – Pant Sahab used his smarts and things worked out in our favour,” he said on the show.

After the break, Hardik Pandya dismissed the dangerous Heinrich Klaasen, paving the way for the Indian team to pull themselves back in the driving seat. Though David Miller also threatened to take the title away from the team, the pressure was on South Africa in the last 2-3 overs, and India capitalised on the situation.

“That is what happened. Hardik dismissed Klaasen in that over, and from then onwards, pressure started to build on South Africa. Then all the boys gathered and started to sledge their batters, details of which I can’t disclose here, but it was essential because we had to win at any cost. To win that, we were willing to take a few fines. That is why I told the boys to say whatever they felt like; we would handle the umpires and referees later,” he explained.
