The actress has been absent from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but in upcoming Thor: Love and Thunder Jane will follow in her comic book counterpart’s footsteps and become the new Thor.

The Actress who has not played a major role since 2013’s Thor: The Dark World. She reunites with Chris Hemsworth in the just announced Thor: Love and Thunder.

Director Taika Waititi announced on stage at Comic-Con International on Saturday July 20 that She’d be returning as the female Thor along with Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson.

Director Taika waititi took the stage at San Diego Comic-Con during the Massive Marvel Studios panel to surprise fans. Moderator Jessica Chobot prompted Waititi with a question about what comic book story line had inspired him, Which was quick to answer. When we were shooting Ragnarok, I was reading Jason Aaron’s Mighty Thor, and it introduces female Thor so there’s only one person who can do that.

Waititi’s decision to bring back Portman’s character Jane Foster as a female Thor isn’t quite as unprecedented as it sounds, since Marvel Comic gave Jane the hammer about five years ago.

Jane Foster has been part of Thor’s corner of the Marvel universe since 1962’s Journey into Mystery #84, just one issue after the God of Thunder himself debuted.

Charachter’s been through a lot over the decades, but soon after she was diagnosed with breast cancer, she discovered she could pick up Mjolnir after Thor Odinson lost the ability to do so.

The filmmaker has based his upcoming movie on the Marvel Comics series The Mighty Thor by Jason Aaron and artist Russel Dauterman which introduced the concept.
