World Cup 2019 Update: Shikhar Dhawan ruled out to World cup, Rishabh Pant in as replacement


Shikhar Dhawan’s journey has come to end midway thought India’s campaign. As he suffered a hairline fracture to his left thumb against Australia on June 9. On Wednesday , Opener batsman Shikhar Dhawan ruled out of the tournament due to thumb injury.

Rishabh Pant has been brought in as a replacement of Shikhar Dhawan, has a fracture at the base of the first metacarpal of his left hand. He will remain in cast until mid July which rules him out of ICC World Cup. We have requested Rishabh Pant as the replacement, Team India Manager Sunil Subramaniam said.

Shikhar Dhawan’s absence will be a big blow for India as the left hand hit form in the innings against Australia. He has been leading run scorer in the last three ICC events and formed a prolific opening pair with Rohit Sharma.

R Pant has played five ODIs since his debut against West Indies in October last year and average 23.25. He was part of India’s squad during their home series against Australia this year. The selector opted for Dinesh Karthik’s experience ahead of Rishabh Pant when they named the World cup squad.

In IPL 2019, he played 16 matches and scored 488 runs at an average of 37.53. Pant also made a good start to his Test career and in nice matches. He has managed to score 696 runs at an average of 49.71 and this includes two centuries.

AS per a source, Dhawan was never going to be fit in time, However the team management was reluctant to name a replacement. It was never on same page with selectors who wanted to announce an official replacement right after his diagnosis.

In absence of Shikhar Dhawan, KL Rahul had opened India’s innings with Rohit Sharma against Pakistan. KL Rahul was very good with bat and scored 57 runs with partnership of 136 for 1st wicket.
