Vinesh Phogat became the first Indian woman to win wrestling gold at the ongoing Asian Games 2018 and now , 24 year old has another reason to celebrate.
It was a memorable birthday for Vinesh Phogat , golden girl of Indian wrestling Phogat got engaged to her long time boyfriend Somveer Rathi on Saturday.
The interesting part bout he engagement was that the ceremony took place completely at the Indra Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi.
Somvir, who is a Greco-Roman wrestler m and vinesh exchanged rings at the airport and the cake cutting ceremony also took place there in the presence of both families.
Since its was her birthday, Somveer wanted to get engaged on Saturday itself. after she reached in the late night , he rushed to the airport and exchanged rings there itself.
Both know each other for last 7 years, she had earlier posted a picture of herself with Somveer on social media side with a captioned, “The best decision i ever made! Gold you pinned me for life”
She received a hearty welcome after she came out of the airport with the Tricolor wrapped around her sholdier and the gold medal around her neck.
her well wishes clicked pictured at the airport and her family disturbed sweets among the fans and supporters, she was greeted with flowers, dhol beats and Bharat Maa ki Jai slogans.
Vinesh clarified that, the Surprised engagement ceremony was not an outcome of that incident. “No it was nothing like that. when we got engaged, many people thought that we did so to put the record straight. for me , that article involving Neeraj did not exist. Somvir and I are friends for 7-8 years and the whole country knows about our relationship”, Vinesh told.
She Added, It was my 24th birthday and our families wanted to make celebration big. for the last 4-5 years. it has so been happening that is was losing bouts just before my birthday.
“This time , after securing the Asiad gold medal, She wanted to celebrate the win in a grand way.”
Vinesh defeated Japan’s Yuki Irie in the 50kg woman’s Freestyle final to clinch India’s second gold wrestling after Bajrang Punia bagged one in men’s 65kg.
Vinesh Phogat thrashed her Japanese opponent Yuki 6-2 to give India their second gold of tournament.
